All courses  /  Editing in Premiere

You're already cutting with some confidence. This is about the hour a day you are losing anyway

After a while everyone settles into habits. Some of them are good. The rest cost you an hour here and an hour there, every week, without ever announcing themselves as the problem. You think you're working effectively. Your'e not.

Two days on working substancially faster: rough-cutting at speed, trimming from the keyboard instead of the mouse, and setting the program up so the things you do fifty times a week take one keystroke instead of six.

After the course you can

Adobe Premiere — advanced

  • Rough-cut a piece considerably faster than you do today
  • Trim with the keyboard rather than the mouse, and see it in the hours
  • Use AI to work faster, not to generate video
  • Set up multicam, Productions and nesting without the project becoming unmanageable
  • Move material to After Effects, Audition and Photoshop and back without unnecessary rendering
  • Automate boring tasks, and get more time for the creative part

What we cover

The program

Starting a job in seconds rather than 15 minutes

  • Folder templates and template projects
  • Presets for everything you do often
  • Import routines, sorting, subclips and backup that hold up under pressure

Rough-cutting at speed

  • Storyboard editing from the bin
  • Top and tail, stringouts, and why they beat scrubbing
  • Pancake timelines: using sequences as sources for other sequences
  • Text-based editing where the material is speech

Fine editing

  • Trim mode and dynamic trimming
  • Building a keyboard layout that fits your hands
  • Custom workspaces that stop you hunting for panels

Sound, faster

  • Normalize, and presets for compressor and EQ
  • Auto Ducking, and when to overrule it
  • AI speech cleanup when sound is bad

Color, faster

  • Masks, adjustment layers and presets
  • Shot matching that survives being done in a hurry
  • Where automatic correction is good enough, and where it is not

Graphics

  • Taking control of the Graphics Templates panel
  • Reusing advanced effects in seconds through template projects
  • Working with a MOGRT package somebody else built

Multicam, Productions and big jobs

  • Multicam that stays manageable
  • Productions: when it helps and when it is overkill
  • Nesting without losing the thread

Finishing and delivery

  • Auto Reframe and export presets for every platform at once
  • Archiving so the project opens again in three years
  • The user errors that are so common they look like software faults

The honest bit

Some of what you learn here will feel worse for the first week. Changing a trimming habit slows you down before it speeds you up, and if nobody warns you about that, you go back to the old way on Wednesday. Consider this a warning.

Who it is for

Editors, content producers and photographers who already work in Premiere daily or weekly and want to work considerably faster — while getting consistant results.

Prerequisites

Real editing experience in Premiere, or the beginners' course. One machine per participant with a current version of Premiere and at least 10 GB free for the footage you are given.

Bring

Bring a project you found slow or painful. Diagnosing a real one in front of the group teaches more than any demo.

Open courses

Prefer a fixed date for one person?

Also runs as an open course at Qross Kurssenter — classroom in Oslo and live online on the same dates.

Questions

About this course

Is this useful if we do not do long-form work?

Yes. Most of the time saved is in the material handling, the setup, and cutting faster, and a team that publishes short pieces daily gets more out of that than one cutting a single documentary.

We are on an older version of Premiere. Does that matter?

Tell me which version and I will adjust. Most of the workflow techniques go back years; only some of the AI features are recent, and those parts can be swapped for something else.

Can you look at our actual project setup?

Please. Bring a real project and the delivery specs you work against, and we will use them. It is the single most valuable hour of the two days.
