Tell the computer to build a rough cut, and go make coffee

Half the work in an edit suite is not editing. It is renaming clips, setting label colors, building bins, making string-outs, pulling a rough cut out of a transcript, and writing the same expression for the fourth time this month.

Adobe Premiere and After Effects can now be driven by an AI assistant that does those things while you do something that needs a human; The creative part of the job. This is a one-day course in setting that up on your own machines and knowing exactly how far to trust it.

  • Length1 day
  • FormatOn site or online
  • LanguageNorwegian or English
  • CategoryAutomation

After the course you can

Talk to the timeline

  • Use the AI Assistants in Premiere and After Effects on your own machine
  • Have a project organized, named and color-coded without touching a bin
  • Build a rough cut straight from the transcript by describing what you want
  • Get an expression written, explained and corrected without opening a forum
  • Recognize a hallucination before it costs you a day, and work so it cannot

What we cover

The program

Talking to it

  • Typing versus speaking — which is faster for which task
  • Tools that make dictation to an AI Assistant practical
  • Prompts that produce a testable result instead of a guess
  • Giving the assistant the context it needs about your project and your house rules

Premiere in practice

  • Tidying and organizing a project: bins, names, label colors
  • Building a rough cut from a transcript by description
  • Batch operations across dozens of clips
  • Audio work: levels, ducking, cleanup, on request

After Effects in practice

  • Letting it build simple motion graphics and animation
  • Having it write, explain and debug expressions
  • Where it saves hours, and where it costs you an hour
  • Tell it to build a script, making the same task super fast next time

The three routes, and which to choose

  • Adobe's own tools inside the applications
  • MCP servers and language models
  • Plugins and panels
  • What each one can reach, what it cannot, and what it costs

Setup

  • Connecting LLMs to Premiere and After Effects on your own machine
  • Permissions: what you give it access to, and what you do not
  • Keeping the setup working after an Adobe update

The limits and the traps

  • What the technology still cannot do — stated plainly
  • When to push back on the answer the AI gives you
  • Backup and version control routines so a bad suggestion costs nothing
  • Keeping the running cost down, and getting better answers while you do

The honest bit

A fair part of this day is spent on getting things connected, and to find the limitations. That is not padding. The people who get hurt by these tools are the ones who were sold the demo and never told where the edge is, and knowing the failure modes saves more time than any of the tricks.

Who it is for

Editors, content producers, motion designers, journalists and communication people who want to automate the repetitive half of the job. It works for beginners who are comfortable in the software, and for experienced users who already script.

Prerequisites

You need to be comfortable in Premiere or After Effects. No programming experience needed. You need a machine with the software installed and permission to install helper applications.

Bring

Bring a real project and real workflow problems you want to solve — preferably one you're actively working on. The demo project everyone uses is not where this gets interesting.

Questions

About this course

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You describe what you want in ordinary language, in plain English (or Norwegian if you prefer that). The one thing you do need is the judgment to check a result before you trust it, and that is what the day is really about.

Is our material sent anywhere?

That depends entirely on which of the three routes you choose, and it is covered in detail on the day. Some setups run locally, some send text but never video, some send neither. If your organization has rules about this, bring them and we will build a setup that fits.

Will this still work after the next Adobe update?

Usually, and when it breaks it is normally the connection rather than the work. You leave knowing how to re-establish it, which matters more than any single trick.
